General merchandise discounts are attached to an account, not a code
In American general retail the sitewide code is the least of it. Marketplaces push discounts down to the item and the seller, so what looks like a coupon is a clippable offer sitting on one listing. Big-box chains hold their structural discount inside a paid membership or a store card and use spend thresholds to lift the basket. Warehouse clubs price the discount into the membership fee and run manufacturer-funded instant rebates rather than codes. Drugstores are the exception and the most generous case in the country: their published coupon policies allow a manufacturer coupon, a store coupon and loyalty rewards on the same item in one transaction. Which account you shop under matters more than which code you paste.
Which US chains move price, and in which weeks
| Store | Weeks it actually discounts | What moves in that window |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Summer deal event in July, a second in October, Cyber Week | Own-brand devices, household staples, private label |
| Walmart | July deal week, back-to-school, Cyber Week | Toys, entry electronics, apparel basics |
| Target | Member sale weeks in July and October, Cyber Week | Home, toys, seasonal decor, kids |
| Costco | Monthly member savings book, post-holiday clearance | Appliances, electronics, bulk pantry |
| eBay | Seller coupon events and refurbished promotions | Refurbished tech, parts, collectibles |
| Chewy | First recurring order, then a standing autoship rate | Pet food, prescription diets, litter |
The two ends of that table behave in opposite ways: Amazon discounts item by item all year, while Costco concentrates everything into a published monthly book and a membership fee.
Unit price is the only honest comparison on household goods
Shelf tags in many states must carry a price per ounce, per count or per sheet, and that number is the only thing that survives a change of pack size. Club packs are not automatically cheaper per unit, and a promotional multipack frequently lands above the everyday large size. Store brands set the floor of the category and a national brand with a coupon rarely goes underneath it, so the store brand's unit price is the benchmark for judging any offer. Staples run on a repeating promotional cycle measured in weeks, so missing one sale costs very little and stockpiling at a mediocre price never pays. On marketplaces the crossed-out figure is entered by the seller and is not a market reference; the honest comparison is the same item's current price from two other sellers.
Return windows, restocking fees and who pays for the label
- There is no federal right of return on an online purchase in the United States. The retailer's published policy is the entire rule, and windows commonly run thirty to ninety days, shorter on electronics and longer for paid-tier members.
- An item sold by a third-party seller follows that seller's policy, not the marketplace's, although the platform guarantee still covers non-delivery and items that do not match the listing.
- Some returns ship on a prepaid label and some deduct the label cost from the refund; a few retailers now charge a fee when a closer free drop-off point was available.
- Clearance and open-box items are often final sale, which has to be disclosed before purchase.
- Keep the original packaging until the window closes: large and fragile goods are frequently refused without it, and some categories carry a restocking fee once opened.
Memberships, store cards and split payments at a US checkout
Paid retail memberships bundle delivery without an order minimum, fuel discounts, early access to sale events and a longer return window; the fee is recovered by frequency, so the honest test is how many orders a month you actually place. Store credit cards carry an enrollment discount and issue rewards as store credit with a redemption window rather than as cash. Split-payment plans offered at most large checkouts are loans, and a missed installment can be reported or sent to collection. Sales tax is calculated at the delivery address, so the same cart costs different amounts in two states, and a code is applied before tax. And the FTC's mail, internet and telephone order rule requires a seller to ship within the time it promised, or within thirty days when it promised nothing, or to offer the buyer a cancellation with a refund.
The retail year in the United States
January is holiday clearance, storage and organization. February is thin in general merchandise: the Presidents Day weekend is the first broad promotional event since the holidays, and it is when clubs and big-box chains push out what is left of winter seasonal stock. Appliances and mattresses peak on that same weekend, and that market is read in home and appliances. Memorial Day at the end of May opens the outdoor season. July is the summer deal week, and the whole market matches it whether or not it participates. Late July through August is back-to-school, when a series of states suspend sales tax for a few days on qualifying items: Texas exempts clothing, footwear, backpacks and school supplies priced under $100 each, and Massachusetts runs a weekend covering most retail items under a set cap. October carries a second deal event and the start of holiday buying. Late November, from the day after Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, is the deepest and broadest window in the calendar. December narrows quickly as shipping cutoffs pass. Grocery runs on its own rhythm, set out in the food category.
Threshold offers and store credit that cost more than they save
Adding an item to clear a free-shipping minimum spends more than the shipping charge in nearly every case. Store credit earned during an event is worth something only if you will genuinely shop again inside the redemption window, and it is usually forfeited if the order that earned it goes back. Opening a store card for a single enrollment discount is expensive as soon as the balance revolves. Cross-border parcels changed materially when duty-free treatment of low-value imports ended: landed cost now includes duty and a carrier handling charge, so check whether the seller collects it at checkout or the courier bills on delivery. And doorbusters built on a model number sold by only one chain exist precisely so that no price comparison is possible.
