Apparel is priced to be marked down, and the markdown is scheduled
American department stores and mall brands run a markdown ladder: an item enters at full price, moves to a promotional price within weeks, then to permanent markdown, then to clearance with a final cut at the end of its season. Full price is an opening position, not a market price, and the ladder runs whether or not a code exists. Department stores layer a code, an exclusion list and earned store credit on top of that ladder, which is why one garment can carry three prices in a single visit. Vertical brands that own their production discount by season and category instead of sitewide. Athletic brands protect current releases and cut the outgoing version. Beauty is the outlier: prestige lines are almost never price-cut, and the value arrives as points, samples, tier events and gift with purchase.
Fashion and beauty stores on this site and their markdown weeks
| Store | When it discounts | Which departments move |
|---|---|---|
| Macy's | Friends and family events, one-day sales, end of season in January and July | Apparel, home textiles, fine jewelry |
| Kohl's | Store-credit events pinned to holiday weekends | Apparel, kids, small appliances |
| Old Navy | Weekly category rotation and the days around major holidays | Basics, denim, kids and baby |
| Nike | Previous-season lines and member-only windows | Running and training footwear, apparel |
| Sephora | Loyalty tier events in spring and fall | Skincare, fragrance, value sets |
| Ulta Beauty | Recurring beauty events in spring and fall, rewards multipliers | Mass and prestige beauty, hair tools |
The mechanics differ more than the table suggests: Macy's discounts the ticket, Ulta Beauty discounts the basket through points, and Nike discounts by releasing a successor.
Fabric, construction and the season floor tell you what to pay
Read the fiber content label first: the same silhouette in a natural-fiber blend and in an all-synthetic version are different products at the same rack price, and they age differently after a dozen washes. Construction is the second reference — lined against unlined, finished seams, real leather against bonded, cemented against stitched soles. The genuine floor for any seasonal item is the final clearance cut at the end of its season, by which point the size run is broken, so the trade is price against availability rather than price against quality. Compare-at prices at off-price and outlet channels frequently describe goods manufactured for that channel, so treat them as a category signal and never as a reference price. And last year's version of a running shoe is usually the same shoe under a different upper.
Sizing charts, fit and the rules for opened beauty products
- There is no federal apparel sizing standard in the United States, only voluntary industry ones, so a size number is a brand's statement rather than a measurement. Compare your own measurements against that brand's chart every time.
- Shoe widths and fractional sizes vary by last, and running brands publish fit notes that matter more than the number.
- Ultra-fast-fashion imports run smaller than US mall sizing and their charts are in centimeters.
- The Food and Drug Administration does not require an expiration date on cosmetics. Sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug and does carry one. Fragrance and active skincare degrade with heat and light rather than on a printed date.
- Opened beauty products are returnable at the major American beauty retailers within their published windows, which is unusual internationally, though any gift with purchase goes back with the return.
- Final-sale status has to be disclosed before purchase, and several states go further and require the refund policy itself to be posted where the buyer can see it: in California a store that does not post one owes a full refund for thirty days.
Refund windows, earned credit and state tax on fashion orders
With no federal right of return behind it — the general rule is set out in general retail — the apparel policy is whatever the retailer publishes: commonly thirty to ninety days, shortened on clearance and on jewelry. That window is counted from delivery and not from the day the order was placed, which is what decides whether ordering one garment in two sizes still works when the parcel runs late. Store credit earned during a sale event is the defining mechanic of the American department store: it is redeemable only inside a later, narrow window, it usually cannot be applied to the order that generated it, and it is forfeited if that order goes back. Beauty loyalty points buy products and events rather than reducing the register total. Sales tax is where clothing genuinely differs from every other category: several states exempt apparel outright, New York exempts items under $110 from state tax, and Massachusetts exempts clothing under $175 with tax charged only on the excess.
The US apparel and beauty year
January is end-of-season clearance on fall and winter stock, and the deepest cut before summer. February brings Presidents Day department store events and fragrance sets for Valentine's Day. March and April carry the spring beauty events and dressy wear for Easter. May is Mother's Day, graduation and the Memorial Day weekend. July is mid-season clearance on spring and summer stock alongside the summer deal week. August is back-to-school on kids' basics, denim and backpacks, boosted by the state tax holidays that cap qualifying clothing prices. September and October return to fall beauty events and rewards multipliers. Late November is Cyber Week, broad across the store but usually shallower on apparel than the end-of-season clearance that follows it. December is gift sets, with the final markdowns landing the week after the holiday.
Apparel codes that exclude exactly what you came for
Exclusion lists are longer in this category than anywhere else on the site: designer and licensed brands, athletic footwear, fragrance, small electricals and anything already reduced. A code that excludes the department you were browsing is worth nothing, and the cart is the only reliable test. Buying an extra item to cross a store-credit threshold spends real money to earn conditional money. Clearance in a broken size run generates the returns that clearance policies then restrict. Ordering ultra-fast fashion without checking the centimeter chart produces the highest return rate in apparel. And cross-border parcels now arrive with duty owed, charged on top of whatever the code removed.
